There’s just something about snack foods, am I right? I don’t know if it’s just one thing or many, but I love sitting down with a bowl (or two) of snack food and munching away while watching Netflix.

Perhaps it’s that they’re so easy to eat, maybe it’s the magic of that little crunch in every bite, or more than likely it’s because they’re almost always sugary/salty and delicious!

One of the most perfectly snackable snacks is trail mix!

For the past however-long, we’ve been buying the “Monster” trail mix from Target’s brand ‘Favorite Day’ (previously Archer Farms). It’s filled with raisins, chocolate-covered candies (aka “m&m’s”), peanut butter chips, and milk chocolate chips.

This delicious trail mix is a whopping 18g net carbs for a ¼ cup (approximately 1.3 ounces)! Makes me want to cry just thinking about it…

Or it did – until I came up with my OWN “monster” trail mix recipe! I’m calling my version Keto PB&J Trail Mix.

This keto trail mix recipe is super easy to make and contains only 5.7g net carbs per 1.3 ounces…literally ⅓ the carbs as the store-bought version!

Portion Control is King When Low Carb or Keto

Although this keto trail mix is pretty low-carb, make sure you don’t go overboard with it, especially if you’re following a strict keto diet. Almost 6g of carbs can make a huge dent in your daily allotment if you’re only permitted 21-30g total.

I’m at a point in my journey that I’m somewhat flexible with my keto diet and allow a slightly higher number than 21-30g net carbs. This is especially true if I’ve worked out that day. Don’t get me wrong – I still try to stay pretty low carb and I strive to make smart decisions, but I allow more flexibility now than I did when I was in full blown weightloss mode.

There’s mixed opinions on if you should “add in” carbs to your daily total based on how much you workout. I’m of the mindset that it’s ok to add in additional calories or carbs that I “earned” from a workout that day since all of my intake goals are set based on a sedentary lifestyle.

To clarify – if I workout in the morning and my tracker says that I burned 400 calories and 6g carbs, then I will allow myself to add those on top of my daily intake, so I technically consume an additional 6g net carbs that day.

Not everyone agrees with this, but it makes sense to me and I have still seen positive results in my weightloss journey following this system.

Anyways, as I was saying, just make sure you keep track of how much you’re eating and fit this keto sweet snack into your schedule mindfully.

Quick Tip

Measure out one serving before you start snacking! This will ensure that you don’t lose track of how much you’ve eaten and next thing you know you’re finishing the whole container! And trust me – you will finish it if you’re not careful!

So what do you need to make this Keto Trail Mix?

It’s actually quite simple! All you’ll need is:

Lily’s Dark Chocolate Chips and Lily’s White Chocolate Chips – Lily’s chocolates are sugar-free and keto-friendly. You can also use milk chocolate if you don’t like dark or white chocolate! I absolutely love the bite that you get with dark chocolate and although I don’t LOVE white chocolate by itself, I do love it mixed with other ingredients, especially fruit.

Roasted and Salted Peanuts – you can choose to go unsalted if you’d like, but I prefer a sweet and salty trail mix. Besides, those on a low-carb or keto diet tend to need extra salt!

Raw Almonds – almonds provide all sorts of health benefits, including reducing hunger! Feel free to use salted almonds, or trade them out altogether with a different nut if they’re not your favorite.

Freeze-Dried Strawberries, Raspberries, or Blueberries – although fruit, in general, isn’t super keto-friendly, berries in moderation are perfectly acceptable and pair really nicely with the chocolates!

Medium Bowl – to mix all of your ingredients in!

Digital Kitchen Scale – I’ve created this recipe by weight so that you don’t need to fiddle with measuring cups and all the other variations that can occur with different types of ingredients. I recommend placing your bowl on the scale, using the scale’s tare feature so the screen reads ‘0 ounces’, and then adding each of your ingredients by the specified weight on the recipe card below! This also reduces the dishes you’ll have to wash! #winning
